Job Description :Boise State University, powered by creativity and innovation, stands uniquely positioned in the Northwest as a metropolitan research university of distinction. Facilities Management at Boise State University is looking for an experienced Landscape Manager to provide oversight and leadership to the Landscape Services team. The mission of Landscape Services is to provide and maintain the Boise State University campus and outlying properties. This includes the daily care and meeting the environmental standards of all plant materials, trees, lawns, irrigation systems and an intramural field. The landscape team maintains a 180 acre urban campus that continues to expand and a few outlying properties not contiguous to the campus. The Landscape Manager is responsible for the oversight of the campus and grounds team which includes landscape technicians, arborists, irrigation specialists, and equipment operators. The ideal candidate will be a visionary grounds leader interested in not only cultivating picturesque landscapes, but also cultivating an award winning workforce that is highly motivated and engaged.
You will have the opportunity to:
  • Develop workplace safety curriculum including: operating procedures for all maintenance & operations staff (maintenance, physical plant, grounds, custodial, central receiving, transportation, and parking)
  • Manage and supervise personnel involved in all landscape related services for landscape and hardscape including snow removal.
  • Manage the department’s personnel, operations and budget.
  • Develop a plan for maintaining an intramural field.
  • Complete and carryout the irrigation master plan for campus.
  • Monitor and maintain all aspects that impact the safety and appearance of the campus.
  • Work collaboratively in a diverse cultural environment.
  • Provide short range and long range landscape planning.
  • Provide management and monitoring for all special customer funded projects.
  • Develop a strategic master plan for landscape for the Boise State University campus.
  • Refine the campus snow removal plan.
  • Provide management and monitoring for all landscape related improvements.
  • Manage the department’s equipment inventory.
  • Coordinate with Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability in the requirements of our NPDES Stormwater Discharge Permit.
  • Coordinate with A&E Services on landscape plans for future projects and improvements to the campus.
  • Develop a budget and plan for equipment replacement.
  • Apply administrative, management and supervisory practices and principles in accordance with Facilities Management and University Policies.
  • Establish and maintain on-going safety programs with documentation pertinent to employees.
  • Reviews and recommends personnel actions for approval, evaluations, commendations, disciplinary action and termination.
  • Makes personnel decisions in a fair and sound manner for a diverse work force.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Note: All landscape employees are required to drive University vehicles on a daily basis as one of their primary job functions.

 

Qualifications: At a minimum you should have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant sciences, or other related field or equivalent professional experience
  • Five years related experience including one year of related managerial experience in the following:
    • Read and identify building and site plans
    • Develop scope and specifications of work and estimating for project management
    • Managing a diverse plant community
    • Central computerized irrigation design and operation
    • Daily care and meeting the environmental standards of all plant materials, trees, lawns, and irrigation systems
    • Appropriate safety practices
    • Proper use and application of pesticides and herbicides
    • Excellent team leading experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate (both verbally and in writing) effectively with management and staff
  • Computer skills including proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Applicants for this position must also:
    • Possess a current valid driver’s license
    • Successfully pass a background investigation to be considered for hire including meeting the following criteria to be considered for the position:
      • Accumulated less than, nine (9) or more points within the past (36) months (see IDPA 39.02.71) on their Idaho driver’s license record

SPRINKLER TECH POSITION –

Position Summary: Repair and Maintenance of Residential & Commercial Irrigation Systems. Irrigation Technicians must have a strong work ethic, and enjoy interacting with customers.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Install systems and ensure they function efficiently.
  • Repair and maintain valves, tracing electrical components, installing and initializing clocks and timers, locating existing zones and valves, and performing pump repairs.
  • Ensure that customers are satisfied completely through effective communication, relationship building, and regular site visits.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to operate, lift, carry, push, and pull 20 to 50 pounds of landscape material and equipment

This position will work in all areas of landscape &irrigation: installation, irrigation service and repair, system activations, system winterizations, sales and customer service. Knowledge of irrigation, grading, plant identification, planting and sod techniques and drainage is a must. The foreman also coordinates field operations with office personnel by keeping communication channels open and reporting day to day accomplishments and problems of their crews.  The foreman also monitors assigned crews to ensure their duties are accomplished safely and completely.

Duties

  • Work under direct supervision of Superintendent
  • Responsible for job production and quality keeping projects within budget and on time
  • Supervise/schedule the activities of workers and maintain good working relationships
  • Train staff in job duties, safety procedures aand policies
  • Ensures that the work is being done in a safe and efficient mannerand maintains excellent quality
  • Ensures proper use and safe keeping of company’s resources and equipment
  • Coordinate material orders and delivery
  • Complete daily and weekly paperwork for projects

Position Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with clean record
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment, random and post-accident drug test
  • Knowledge of irrigation, grading, plant identification, planting and sod techniques, drainage, retaining walls, flagstone and pavers
  • Ability to read and execute work from landscape plans
  • Ability to operate machinery (pipe puller, trencher, skid steer)
  • Ability to build position relationships with customers and employees at all levels in teh organization
  • Ability to resolve problems with a srtong sense of urgency and collaboration
  • Adaptable and sound judgemetn when faced with multiple, competing priorities
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds
  • Must be able to work 55-60 hours per week and Saturdays during our season
